Generate a strong random password or passphrase

Quick answer

Open Toolfox → Password Generator and a password appears right away: choose random characters (20 by default) or a passphrase of words, and it updates as you change options. Passwords come from your operating system's secure random number generator and are never stored. It runs entirely on your computer (Mac, Windows or Linux). Files are never uploaded.

Good to know

  • Passwords come from your operating system's secure random number generator, with every character or word equally likely. They are never logged, stored or sent anywhere.
  • Strength is the entropy of how the password was generated (assuming an attacker knows these settings): under 50 bits is Weak, 50 to 79 is Good, 80 or more is Strong.
  • Passphrases use the EFF large wordlist (7,776 words, CC BY 3.0 US, by the Electronic Frontier Foundation), built into the app.
  • A password manager is the safest place to keep generated passwords.
