Developer & Text · Word Counter
Count the words and characters in your text
Quick answer
Open Toolfox → Word Counter and paste or type your text (or open a TXT, Markdown or HTML file). Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and the most used keywords update as you type. It runs entirely on your computer (Mac, Windows or Linux). Files are never uploaded.
How to do it
- Open Word Counter.
- Paste or type text, or click Open File… to load one.
- Read the counts as you type.
- Copy the results or Save… them as word-count.txt.
Options you can set
- Ignore common words in keywords
Good to know
- Characters are counted as you see them: an accented letter or an emoji with a skin tone counts as one.
- Words follow Unicode word rules. In Chinese and Japanese, each ideograph counts as one word, so counts are estimates for those languages.
- Sentences are detected by punctuation, so abbreviations like “Dr.” can split a sentence.
- Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute. The common-word list is English.
